19th Century Chinese Export Canton Porcelain Soup Tureen
A striking, authentic Chinese export porcelain soup tureen captures the height of the early 19th-century global trade era. Styled in the highly collectible "Canton" pattern, the tureen features an iconic, hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue riverscape populated by traditional pagodas, scholar figures, sample boats, and rustic bridges, all framed by a classic "rain and cloud" border. The vessel is crafted in an elegant, canted rectangular form with a robust footed base, flanked by two beautifully molded sculptural handles.
A view of the underbelly provides definitive evidence of its age and hand-crafted heritage, featuring a wide, unglazed foot rim that has aged to a natural orange-brown hue. The underside remains completely unmarked, showcasing a textbook "orange peel" glaze texture, iron inclusions, and tiny pre-firing kiln vent holes inside the handles. This fine example of Qing Dynasty utility and Chinoiserie artistry makes an impressive center table focal point or a foundational addition to any Chinese Export collection.
Origin: Canton (Guangzhou), China
Period: Late Qing Dynasty (c. 1800–1840)
Medium: Hand-painted Underglaze Porcelain
