Authentic 20th-Century Croft & Assinder Brass Airedale Terrier Fireplace Companion Base
A highly collectible, authentic British brass Airedale / Wire Fox Terrier fireplace companion base. Manufactured circa 1930 by the renowned Croft & Assinder at the Standard Brass Works in Birmingham, England, this rare sand-cast piece carries the historic design perfected by Croft & Assinder.
Unlike common solid-backed doorstops, this functional antique was engineered as a fireside utility piece. It features a beautifully sculpted, hollow-backed dog that houses its original, matching heavy brass cylindrical matchstick and tool container. The sand-casting technique perfectly captures the stylized, deeply textured fur characteristic of the breed.
The piece stands in excellent vintage condition, boasting a highly desirable, unpolished natural patina with rich verdigris oxidation in the crevices. It retains its original steel mounting brackets fastened by period-correct flathead hardware. The bottom rims have been thoughtfully fitted with protective felt pads.
Measuring as a substantial, heavy-cast decorative statement object, this exceptional piece of canine metalware is perfect for Airedale enthusiasts, antique brass collectors, or as a sophisticated hearthside accent.
